I often go to Stoneground just because it's one of the VERY few places in Salt Lake where you can be seated after 9pm at a restaurant (I think seating stops at 11 or so - call and ask). I'm always impressed. My boyfriend loves the beer, I love the pork chops. And back when I was a vegetarian, it was veggie friendly. This place is highly recommended in my book.

Pros: Pork chops, service

Cons: Many other restaurants will pale in comparison.

I had the pizza for the first time last night and it was like a fish finding water in the desert. Stoneground is a really classy place to get good pasta, beer and shoot pool, but the remarkable thing about this place for me is something that some might not appreciate; the simple but unsurpassed satisfaction of being served New York style pizza. I moved from New York to SLC six years ago and had their pizza for the first time last night and I tell you, this pizza place serves the thin, slightly crispy crusted pizza, with just right amount of sauce seasoned just the right way, topped with just the right amount of cheese that New Yorkers take for granted and that Salt Lakers might not appreciate, but that someone from New York dearly misses.

Our party of 11 had made a prior reservation. The restaurant was fairly busy with about 60-70 people. As n oted on the table tent there would be approximately 10 minutes between servings when busy. Nevertheless, after an h our and a half our group had only been served 3 pieces of pizza ($12.99 +$2.90 tip included). When we requested more pizza and noted our concern to the manager he came to the table and didn't believe us because his server had made 10 passes and initialed each pass. Well he might have made 10 passes but with each pizza only serving 10-12 slices and about 70 people seated in the restaurant...you can do the math. No apologies, no understanding or compassion. I have been in the business for over 35 years and I was appalled. Their bio states that the owner moved from New York to Salt Lake City, well he should go back to New York if that is his idea of customer service. We do not recommend this restaurant and will not be returning. I teach Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts and have yet another example of poor Hospitality.

Pros: Interesting pizza combinations

Cons: The poorest sesrvice I have experienced in twenty years

Visiting Salt Lake City and my wife wanted a good pizza to enjoy in our hotel room instead of getting out in the bad weather. Found Stoneground on the internet. Called them and learned they do not deliver...no problem. Drove there on a Sunday night to get a pizza to go...they would not sell me one. Said Sunday night was only for dine in....WHAT!! They actually declined to sell me a pizza! I am 53 and travel quite a bit on business and pleasure...have never heard of such nonsense..

They have the best hot chix pizza - try it and you'll crave it like I do! Pretty good service - kinda what you would expect, they get very busy and since it's kinda small you want to get there early. Good place to hang out and have a drink with your friends - maybe play some pool too!

Cons: Parking, Parking, Parking!!!

As a Utah transplant from the Northeast, our family (which does not drink or smoke) was accustomed to the relaxed atmosphere, unique cuisine and personal service of "family pubs" in New Jersey and New York. The Stoneground is like coming home. The owner is an authentic upstate New Yorker. The menu and recipes are from his family cookbook. The original chef was a graduate of the Culinary Institue of America (CIA) on the Hudson River north of New York. The brushetta, pastas, pizza and speciality salads are authentic, delicious and served in generous portions for sharing. The tiramissu is the "best in the west." (If you visit on St. Patrick's Day, you can expect authentic Corned Beef & Cabbage!) Be sure to spend a minute talking to the owner (Bob), who is also the maitre'd much of the time. Tell him "Ray" sent you. P.S. Don't go if you are in a hurry. You'll miss the experinece.

Come for the free pool (2-5pm), stay for the pizza and pasta. This is where I go for creamy tomato basil soup. The chicken pesto pizza is one of my favorites in Salt Lake. The baked ziti has been complimented by more discerning people than I. Everything I've had here has been really really good. It takes four hours to make the tiramisu but if they're out of it, you will just have to go back. (If that sentence seems awkward it's because CitySearch doesn't allow a certain word I tried to use. It begins with 'r' and is followed by 'u', then 'n' then 's.') Be aware that Sunday is all-you-can-eat pizza so the regular menu is not available. Try yelp for really good reviews without all the corporate gunk.

The person that owns this place is a genius. The service was out of this world. The pizza was perfect along with the selection of topping. Toppings ranged from meat, vegetable, and herbs. The pizza had great consistency and just plain looked good. The crab cakes and chicken wings were also made to perfection. The wine that was recommended to go with my entree was "right on". The candle lit tables and smooth jazz music just made my dining experience out of this world.

Pros: great service, great food

So - yeah - four professional women walk in and we each have our own special orders. Nothing too outrageous - salad dressing on the side, a roll with lunch, extra slice of cheese pizza. We immediately noticed our waiter wasn't writing it down - so we asked if he could. When he got back - wrote everything down. 45 MINUTES LATER our incorrect orders showed up - well - partially. The remainder showed up 10 MINUTES LATER THAN THAT! Our waiter - not very nice - pounding things on our table like it was OUR fault the kitchen was slow & he had messed up our order. When I kindly told him he needs to be nicer to his patrons and all he had to do was apologize - he gruffed and walked off. NOT going to be one of our regular spots.

I agree that Stonegrounds isn't the same as it used to be, it was my favorite pizza (The greek god was amazing!) but over the past few months the meatballs are a shadow of what they used to be. And I have been hearing similar feelings all around. However I know many folk who never even knew Stonegrounds served pizza because of their fascination with the pasta's or sandwiches. They are a definite must try! The smoked cheddar sauce is amazing and their tomato basil soup is as addictive as it ever was. And although its been a while since I had it their parmesan eggplant sandwich is the only eggplant I'll ever touch. Staff has always been courteous and quick to give out excellent recommendations. Though I only frequent the restaurant between lunch and 6pm weekdays, so I can relax among only a few other customers and watch the urban life below through their large window. But if your into hustle and bustle their Sunday pizza buffet is a nice way to become familiar with their variety.

Pros: Still has that undiscovered feel and inclusive ambience

Cons: On the pricey side, but you'll be too full to care

Editor's Review

This sleek, urban bistro serves excellent food with a heavy Italian influence.  See the full editorial review.
