The Scene
Colors on the walls call to mind the Southwest. Even with country-western music playing in the background, Z'Tejas avoids an over-the-top display. The chain leans more toward understated Santa Fe and less in-your-face Texas.
The Food
Instead of the usual bread basket, hot cornbread arrives in a small cast-iron skillet. You'll see plenty of those skillets, transporting everything from sizzling shrimp and pork dumplings steamed in ginger-infused soy sauce to artery-clogging chili con queso. Crawfish crab cakes, loaded with big hunks of crab meat, are a good choice for a starter. Proceed directly to the catfish tacos--spicy seared fish paired with cool slaw and wrapped in warm flour tortillas. The decadent chicken relleno, drizzled with sour cream and green chili mole and sprinkled with toasted pumpkin seeds, is also worthwhile.

We went for dinner tonight, ordered a drink and went to the restroom where there was no hot water to wash my hands. I spoke to the manager who said they sometimes have a problem with the hot water getting all the way back to the restrooms and staying hot on a busy night??? We decided not to eat here.
Pros: good drink

I wasn't too impressed with the service nor the food to be honest. The hostess at the front just stared at us when we walked in and it was only after we told her we had 3 in our party that she said or did anything to help us out. (And it's not like it was crowded- it was around 4:30pm and there were plenty of tables inside.) After being seated next to a large party we asked to be moved but that hostess wasn't sure we could move just one table over because she didn't know if anyone was serving that table. She found out there was a waiter/waitress assigned to it so she moved us. Our waitress was not enthusiastic at all. She visited our table regularly enough but something was off in her attitude. Now to the food itself: the corn bread might be homemade and gets points for authenticity but someone left out the flavor! It was moist enough but flavorless. The Chicken Avocado Sandwich I got was really good but not worth what they charged- I've gotten the same dish at other restaurants and it's been cheaper. My husband got the Achiote-Chicken Fajita-like dish and wasn't impressed with that either. The tortillas were the size of your palm and you only get 3. The blacks beans were cold but they did give a lot of guacamole. But no cheese. Overall, we don't plan on going back just because we weren't really impressed with any facet of the place.
Pros: Lots of avocado and guacamole, prompt refills on the water
Cons: tables are set too close to one another, unenthusiastic service, a little pricey for amounts
