Editorial Review for Hires Big H – by Robyn Galbos
The Scene
Hires Big H is a classic American drive-in: Drive up, turn on your headlights for service and enjoy your dinner from a tray propped on your car window. Or, if you don't want crumbs in your car, you can dine inside. A popular place with families and couples on dates.
The Food
Choose from a selection of hamburgers, fries, shakes and sandwiches--everything you'd expect from a drive-in, plus a couple of surprises like a veggie burger. The Hires Big H is the signature hamburger--a quarter-pound of beef, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese and fry sauce make this burger simply dreamy. (Get lots of napkins--it can get messy.) Or try one of the many variations, like the Country H with bacon. The onion rings are cut thick and fried until golden brown.

I'd have to say, I really like Big Hires H burgers, but the wait makes them a little more on the average side. If you have time and are a little more patient, then it would be worth the wait. Delicious burgers, a little costly as well, be willing to shell a little extra dollars.

Hires used to be one of my favorite places for a burger, but lately they have been so bad that I can't remember why I liked them in the first place. The burgers are tasty but more often than not they are overcooked, the service is never better than ok (and often it is absolutely horrible), wait times for a hamburger and fries frequently exceed 25 minutes, and the price/portion ratio is lower than ever. You don't get nearly the amount of food you pay for; a full order of onion rings for example (I don't recall the price but I believe it exceeds $3) netted me 4 rings last time. An order of fries yields about 20 fries, half of those being burnt ends. Get the hot fudge brownie sundae if you need to lose a tooth; often the brownie is so hard that you need to cut it with a knife. You can have a pleasureable experience at Hires, but lately that seems to be ever more infrequent.
Pros: Food can be good, but...
Cons: It often is not. And its always overpriced. And the service is terrible.
