Editorial Review for Utah State Fair Park – by Ed Richards

The Scene
It's a classic fairgrounds setup, a mix of brick buildings, concrete, grandstands and sprawling lawn space, with all the ambience of an abandoned air force base. But in summer months, the park transforms into an epic, outdoor music festival venue. A variety of vendors ensure the masses are well-fed and supplied with souvenirs of the band du jour. For the adult set, a beer garden is available for imbibing. Depending on the musical act, the crowd varies from the classic rock set, the urban cowboy contingent and, more often, the alt-rock-loving Gen X and Y masses.

The Draw
An outdoor venue is what live music during the summer is all about--a big attraction for national tours like the Vans Warped Tour or radio station-sponsored music fests like the Big Ass Show. And of course, there's the Utah State Fair in September.

Insider Tips

Park It

Since adjacent street parking fills up fast, the best bet is to pay the nominal fee for the fairground's lawn and dirt parking lot. Cars parked at neighboring businesses will get towed.

Empty Your Pockets

Unless you want to donate your personal wares to security, leave knives, wallet chains and paraphernalia of dubious legality at home--backpacks and pockets will be searched upon entry.
