Editorial Review for Ken Sanders Rare Books – by Barry Scholl
The Scene
Ken Sanders is widely regarded for the breadth and depth of his knowledge. Now 47, he's been collecting since 1964, when he began his career as a teenage clerk at the long-defunct Central Book Exchange in Sugarhouse, Even then, he says, he was drawn to rare and odd books, as well as tomes on philosophy and the West.
His store, which he opened as a retail operation a few years ago after concentrating for several years on catalog sales, has some 75,000 volumes to peruse. He's constantly buying, trading, and selling to refine his stock.
Good For
Sanders maintains an impressive stock of vintage photos, cards, maps, and ephemera, as well as what he calls his "first loves": books on wilderness, national parks, the Colorado River, and titles by giants like Abbey, Stegner, and even B. Traven of "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" fame.

Ken's place is so much more than a bookstore. It's a cultural center for the city. There's so much to take in there. If you haven't been, treat yourself, and take some time to enjoy it. The staff is great too, very helpful, and none more so than Ken himself. In my experience, some business owners who deal in rarities and antiquities can be a little cold to deal with, particularly if you are not in the position to spend a lot. I've been a customer of Ken's for years, and one of the things I appreciate the most is that even when I had no money Ken still treated me well, answered my questions, and fostered my interests in literature, history and the arts. As Salt Lake - like the rest of the country- melts more and more into the United States of Generica, we are fortunate to have something as unique and authentic as Ken Sanders Bookstore.

best used bookstore in utah, barnone...extremely helpful staff, great selection, super prices. i have been shopping here for over three years and even though i have moved about 45 minutes away, i often make the trip to downtown salt lake just to go shopping here. i frequently find books i am searching for in stock at three to six dollars each. it has been perfect for me to buy most of the books that i need for the book club i host and i always recommend this store to all my friends and colleagues. thank you ken sanders!
