Editorial Review for Cannella's – by Peter Behle
The Scene
On the fringe of Salt Lake City's downtown center, Cannella's has been a classy mainstay for more than 20 years--featuring seasonal outdoor dining and terrific service. While parking can sometimes be a problem (lunch gets crowded), fine food and casual atmosphere make it all worthwhile.
The Food
Favorites include Cannella's long list of pastas and specialties like veal parmesan and pesto chicken. Or try the large Italian salad--a fresh concoction featuring ground sausage (insist on the house dressing) served with a big slice of garlic bread. Daily lunch specials are popular among the regulars--generous servings of rigatoni and a meatball, turkey Tetrazzini or a meatball sandwich, among others.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GoFamiliar and family-run, this is truly one of those places where you can quickly feel like a regular. During a hectic lunch, they'll bring your food to you even if the only seat you can find is at Junior's Tavern next door.
When to GoHigh noon daily can be a rush? It's sometimes smart to be a half-hour early or 45 minutes late.

First time eatint at Cannella's and mine and the gf's experience was a disappointment. The decor and ambiance were amicable. We started our meal with a risotto cake appetizer that was pretty good and the service was friendly. Next came our salad and it was downhill from there. Iceberg lettuce? come on and the balsamic vinaigrette was all oil and a drop of balsamic vinegar, sadly. Next came our pasta, I had the spaghetti with meatballs and the noodles were over cooked and the marinara sauce was way to sweet and the meatballs were flavorless. The gf had the pasta pomodoro and it was completely flavorless and the noodles undercooked. The cooks need a lesson in Al Dente. I had high hopes for this place being that the ambiance was close to perfect for an intimate dinner for two. Were in no rush to try this place again but we will give it another try and hope this bad experience will fade.
Pros: Great ambiance, looks like it would have great food
Cons: The food was not so great

You call this Italian! This place is terrible. The sauce taste like it came froma can, the manicotti tasted frozen and the service while friendly is disinterested at best. If this is what you call italian, I will eat a frozen lasagna, which is probably what they serve. Never again. While this food may have been adequate around the dinner table at home, it is not worth any price in a restaurant, no matter how large the servings. Eat at Michaelanglo's instead, the best italian in the city.
