Editorial Review for Cafe Shambala – by John Youngren

The Scene
Cozy but bright, Cafe Shambala caters to a young, urban crowd partial to downtown restaurants and the funky Avenues area. Bright posters, flags and photos of the Dalai Lama adorn the walls, and a dozen or so tables give the place a relaxed, intimate relaxed feel. While the dining room appears to be understaffed, one server keeps things moving nicely.

The Food
The Tibetan menu, with several vegetarian and vegan options, attracts an eclectic, but sophisticated audience. Try the vegetable mo-mo appetizer: a generous mix of potatoes, carrots and spinach with a flavorful curry smack. The chicken chili entree has a spicy kick--it's a fanciful mix of chicken, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini and pea pods in chili-flake sauce. All the food is served fresh and veggies are crisp. And the open kitchen allows you to keep an eye on the ingredients as they're being prepared.

Insider Tips

B.Y.O.B.

Cafe Shambala doesn't have a liquor license, but it does allow you to bring your own--with no corkage fee.

Tight Parking

The Avenues neighborhood isn't known for its abundant parking. If you're meeting people for lunch or dinner during peak hours, save the frustration and carpool.

You've got to try the Cafe Shambala--especially the lunch buffet (spicy potatos and veggie mo-mos are my favorite!). Mo-Mos are filled pastrys, like huge ravioli. Cozy, fun Avenues eatery where the owners cook, wait tables and wash dishes. Your money stays local! I try to bring my out-of-town guests to Shambala and steer my business lunches in that direction. Even if you just want to sit and chat, order a Tibetan sweet tea--very good.

Pros: Great, authentic food; sole proprietorship; cozy atmosphere

Cons: A little tough to get there on a bicycle!

My wife and I are vegan and tried out Cafe Shambala's lunch buffet (they serve non-vegan items as well). It was absolutely fantastic! The service was excellent and a great crowd. We will be eating here every chance we get.

Pros: Service, food, price

Cons: parking
